What was the highlight of Hotel Maria Victoria Xalapa
Very Good
Having visited other hotels in Xalapa and being disappointed in their cleanliness, Maria Victoria met our expectations. The room was small but comfortable and quiet at night, even if the walls and windows are not soundproof. The bedsheets, towels, carpet, and furniture were spotless upon our arrival and bed linen and towels were changed daily. Breakfast was good overall and featured a wide selection of savoury and sweet dishes. Hotel staff was friendly and most helpful. The location is great if you are visiting Xalapa for leisure, as it is right in the city centre and well connected to many of Xalapa's tourist attractions (the cathedral, Juarez Park, Los Lagos, etc.). Plus, there are a few top notch coffee places around!
Disclaimer: I often travel to Xalapa and finding decent hotel accommodation is challenging (standards are different from other big cities in Mexico). Maria Victoria is past its old glory days, but it remains good value for money. With a few improvements, it could be even better! It would be great if the hotel could hand out one key card per person (they only give one per room "for security reasons"). Also, the key card often gets "blocked" during the day and has to be "unblocked" at the reception desk, which means that you have to stop by the reception every time you get back to the hotel to verify that your key card is working and avoid an unnecessary two-way trip to your bedroom. The rooms don't have hairdryers; while you can ask for one at the lobby, the hotel only has two of them, which is a bit funny when you have 100+ rooms (in our case, one hairdryer was broken and the other was loaned to another room until the end of their stay, so we never got to use it in the six nights we spent there!). The two lifts are fairly slow, stop wherever they have been called (sometimes causing them to go up and down before reaching their final destination) and are small, so if you are in a top floor or have plenty of luggage with you, make sure to head out with some spare time to avoid rushing.
